Skyline Lacrosse is one of the oldest lacrosse organizations in California, first established in 1979. At that time, competition was among high schools such as University High in San Francisco and Novato High School, UC Berkeley and Stanford, the San Fran

Spring registration is open!

Registration for the Spring 2017 season is open, so register your lacrosse player online. Registration for all U8s and U10 girls is first-come first-served, while all other groups must attend player evaluations. The deadline to register is Nov. 18, but we recommend that you register as soon as possible.

Huge thanks to Skyline’s new Administrative Director, Joanne Cain, who put in many hours of work to ensure that the registration system was properly updated for the new age groups.

Player evaluations: what to expect

Please make every effort to make your age group’s evaluation time(s). Specific dates, times, and locations are included in the confirmation email you receive when you register. Skyline holds evaluations for U10 and up, primarily for team placement and to get a sense of players’ experience levels, so we know whether to register “A” or “B” teams with the NCJLA.

Evaluations are positive and age-appropriate. We do everything we can to avoid making cuts, but in some cases we have to cut or waitlist players (for example if we have too many players for one team but not enough for two teams). Player evaluations are in place to help us provide the most positive possible experience for every player, so they can develop their skills at an appropriate level.

New uniform options

Girls: If your jersey from last year still fits, no need to order a new one. You may consider ordering a new kilt. We’ve opted for a new “skort” style (with shorts built in) this year. Skirts from previous years are still fine for the upcoming season (they look exactly the same - the only difference is that the new style has built-in shorts). We’ve also added optional shooter shirts, which you may purchase at registration (see below).

Boys: All boys must order a new jersey. Last year, we discovered that our reversible pinnies were out of compliance with league requirements. New players must purchase a full uniform. The club will cover the cost of replacement pinnies for returning boys. Optionally, boys may order replacement shorts and/or a new shooter shirt (see below). We’ve updated the designs, but last year’s are still fine to wear for the upcoming season.

Have an older 8th grader? You may have to petition…

With the NCJLA’s new age brackets, 8th graders who turn 14 before Sept. 1 (birthdays prior to 9/1/2002) will have to petition to play. The league knows this will be an issue for some players, so if this situation applies to your child, please let us know asap so we can submit a petition early. We expect that the NCJLA will approve the majority of petitions.

Planning a spring break trip? Important dates for spring 2017 season

Mark your calendars now! Practice begins on Jan. 17. Opening weekend for boys will be Feb. 24, and girls' games will begin on March 4. Post season events and playoffs will be held the second and third weekends of May.

Our mandatory Parent Meetings will be held on Jan. 10 (girls) and Jan. 12 (boys).

In order to accommodate the Oakland and Piedmont spring breaks, which occur at different times this year, no games will be scheduled the weekends of April 1 and 2 or April 15 and 16. Games will be scheduled on the weekend of April 8 and 9. Please schedule spring break trips so kids can be back in time for those games.

Teams must play a minimum number of games in order to be eligible for post-season play. The NCJLA is very unforgiving about canceling games due to low turnout, and teams can be excluded from post-season play or the entire club can be put on probation.

Where do your fees go?

This year, we adjusted fees to reflect the new age groups, and we increased fees by approximately 10%. We try to keep cost to play as low as possible, and we encourage families for whom cost is a barrier to reach out to us - we have scholarships and payment plans available. Our goal is that every child who wants to play lacrosse has the opportunity, regardless of ability to pay.

What led to the fee increase? The high price of field space in the area was the primary driver of the fee increase. This year, Merritt College increased the price of field rental by $10 per hour.

What can you do to help keep fees low? To help us keep fees low, families can: volunteer to coach, participate in the cookie dough fundraiser, and donate to the club.

What do your fees pay for? Our approved 2017 budget includes the following expenses:
Coaching and coach support - 27%
Fields - 41%
Administration and league fees - 22%
Equipment - 7%
Scholarships - 3%

Skyline Past President Carlton Chan honored with national award

US Lacrosse has granted Carlton Chan the award for Outstanding Contributor to the Game: U15 and Under.  The youth game's highest honor is given to a US Lacrosse member who is a long-standing contributor to the youth game who has had a lasting impact by supporting the US Lacrosse mission and vision.

Chan became interested in lacrosse in 2006 when his son joined the Skyline Lacrosse club.  He quickly became an avid fan and supporter, coaching his son’s team for four years until his daughter began to play lacrosse.  He then became the coach of her team.  Under his guidance, Skyline fielded its first U13A girls’ team, and first U15A girls’ team, and in 2014, his U13A girls’ team won the Northern California Championship.

Not only has he coached very successfully, but he also held the Girls’ Coordinator role for three years until he stepped into the role as President in 2013.  He has helped take the Skyline club from just three girls’ teams in 2008 to seven teams today.
